INDIANA UNIVERSITY STUDY INFORMATION SHEET FOR:

The perception of lexical stress by L2 Spanish listeners: What influences accuracy in perception?

You are invited to participate in a research study on the perception of stress in Spanish. You were selected as a possible subject because you are a second language or native-speaker of Spanish. We ask that you read this form and ask any questions you may have before agreeing to be in the study.

The study is being conducted by Erik Willis and Bret Linford of Indiana University’s Department of Spanish and Portuguese. It is not funded by any organization.

STUDY PURPOSE
The purpose of this study is to observe accuracy in the perception of stress in Spanish words.

PROCEDURES FOR THE STUDY:
If you agree to be in the study, you will do the following things: complete 4 listening tasks, a word familiarity task, and a background questionnaire. The listening tasks are made up of at no more than 200 items where you will listen to isolated words and words within sentences in Spanish and then choose from a list of multiple choice options which vowel/syllable was stressed. It will take approximately 20-30 minutes to complete all 4 listening tasks. For the word familiarity task, you will be asked to rate on a scale of 1-5 how familiar they are with each Spanish word. It will take approximately five to 5-10 minutes. Finally, for the background questionairre, you will complete a brief form with information about your experience with the Spanish language, which will take approximately 5-7 minutes. All of the tasks will be completed online and will take no more than 1 hour to complete.
